Stairs are as much a part of the Shikoku Pilgrimage as the temples themselves. Most of them lead upwards, to the inner sanctum.
Signs greet the pilgrim at every turn along the way. Some hang quietly and colourfully in the temple hall, whilst others point the way.
The colourful ribbons in the temple hall, shifting, overlapping, almost impossible to grasp.
Then the signpost in the bamboo forest: clear, black and white, unambiguous.
A path. From feeling to direction.
