On the day of the vernissage, the guest list was full.
The room filled up, the jazz duo played, and the atmosphere became calmer instead of louder.
People were standing everywhere in conversation, about art, about life, about the place itself.
I had prepared an information session, half an hour, intended as an option for those who wanted to know something beyond the picture: what the
what the Shikoku is,
why people take this path,
what walking does to the gaze.
I held them twice that evening because the demand after the first round didn't let up.
That moved me more than the crowded room.
It wasn't the pictures alone that held people, but the question behind them.
And then to hear a sentence like that: „Now I have a completely different perspective on the pictures. That was super exciting. Thank you.“
That makes my heart overflow.
A path that continues after the peak
The Shikoku leads to 88 temples. Temple 88 is the climax, where the circuit is actually completed. Many return to Temple 1 afterwards and close the circle. Not all do.
For me, the very core of this series hinges on that. The path is not built towards a goal that can be ticked off. It is not the place that changes, but the person walking it.
I am equally interested in motion blur as a visual language. The camera moves during the exposure. What is created is not the view of a place, but the experience of having been there. Not proof. Rather a trace.
Perhaps it was also the venue that went down so well that evening. At The Pier, the pictures hang where people work, not in a gallery you visit specifically. The conversations flowed accordingly casually. Someone stops in front of a picture, recognises a shape, asks about it, and a few sentences later we are talking about a pilgrimage route in Japan.
The exhibition continues
The works are still hanging. You can view them, without an appointment, without an occasion, and take the time that an exhibition opening night never allows.
