History of origin:
At the end of January, in that interim period when winter still has a firm grip on everything that spring will soon awaken, I discovered a fascinating detail in the dormant vineyards. On some of the vines there were still some of the stalks - the rapports - from the previous harvest period. These fragile skeletons, which once bore juicy berries, seemed to me like witnesses to time: relics of the past and at the same time harbingers of a new cycle. In this quiet morning hour, as the diffuse winter light softened the contours, I saw in these forgotten sable trees a profound message about time and permanence.
Description:
In “Glacial Grape” I captured the ephemeral and at the same time transformed it into the abstract. Using the technique of Intentional Camera Movement, I executed a gentle, flowing movement during the shot, causing the grape's stem to appear in a soft, dream-like state. The deliberate blurring blurs the boundaries between object and space, creating an aesthetic reminiscent of micrographs of an organism.
The monochrome depiction emphasizes the graphic quality of the rappels - their skeletal structure becomes the central element of a minimalist composition. The surrounding white appears like an empty space or a snowy landscape in which the dark stem structure hovers - frozen between past and future, between being and non-being.
Special features:
The uniqueness of this work lies in its dual temporality: it captures a detail that is itself a witness to time. The black vine - normally just a fleeting by-product of the grape harvest - becomes the protagonist here and gains a new aesthetic dimension through its abstract depiction. The picture does not simply show an object, but visualizes the idea of transition and transformation.
The intuitive balance between precision and resolution is also remarkable. The characteristic structure of the grape can still be seen in the center of the picture, while the edges fade into a soft blur. This specific type of movement creates a tension between transience and permanence - similar to the black vine itself, which has survived the winter despite its apparent fragility.
Connection to the exhibition:
“Glacial Grape” vividly embodies the theme ‘Metamorphoses of Silence’. The work reveals the hidden poetry of an inconspicuous element of viticulture and shows how a silent continuity exists even in the winter dormancy. As an intimate micro-study, it expands the spectrum of the exhibition and makes it clear that the metamorphoses of silence manifest themselves both in the expansive landscape shots and in the intricate details of the vineyards. It invites the viewer to sharpen their eye for the small, often overlooked elements in which the essence of viticulture is expressed just as much as in the characteristic silhouettes of the hilly landscape of Rheinhessen.
Bezug zu Rheinhessen:
The rappels of the grapes are an integral, if often overlooked, part of viticulture in Rheinhessen. The fact that they sometimes remain on the vines after the harvest is testament to the natural cultivation of many areas in the region. In Rheinhessen, one of the most traditional wine-growing regions in Germany, traditional knowledge is combined with modern practices. These Rappen probably come from one of the region's typical grape varieties such as Silvaner, Riesling or one of the Burgundy varieties that characterize the terroir of Rheinhessen. The image thus captures a characteristic element of local viticulture and transforms it into a timeless work of art that symbolizes the cycle of nature in Rheinhessen's vineyards.
