History of origin:
On Halloween, when nature presents itself in its most fiery colours, ‘Where is the Vine’ was created in the Hahnheim district. Inspired by this explosive riot of colour in the vine leaves, which surprises anew every year, the painting captures the magical moment when the vineyard landscape transforms into an abstract field of colour. The work playfully questions the boundary between figure and ground - where does the individual leaf end, where does the sea of vines begin?
Description:
With the Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)-technique, the intense red colour of the vine leaves is not simply documented, but translated into a vibrating surface. The targeted movement of the camera during the shot dissolves the contours of the leaves and transforms them into an organic stream of colour that merges with the rows of vines. The result is a visual paradox: while the colour bursts forth with almost violent intensity, the forms blur in a gentle dissolution - a dance between presence and transience.
Special features:
‘Where is the Vine’ is unique in its radical reduction to the colour red as an emotional and scenic statement. While other works in the series work with complex movements, this painting concentrates on the pure power of the pigments - as if nature itself were painting with brushstrokes. The apparent dissolution of the vine structure emphasises the fleeting character of this annual spectacle: The landscape only shines with this intensity for a few days before the leaves fall.
Connection to the exhibition:
The work embodies the theme ‘Between Reality & Vision’ through its extreme abstraction: what initially appears to be a documentary photograph of an autumn landscape turns out to be a study of perception and focus. It challenges the viewer to lose themselves in a frenzy of colour - and yet to search for the hidden structures of the vines.
