History of origin:
Created during a drive along the Rhine front near Nierstein in May, ‘Wuthering Heights’ captures the fleeting magic of the vineyards of Rheinhessen - not as a static landscape, but as a pulsating web of movement and light. Inspired by the rapid passage past the vines, the picture transforms the experience of passing by into a visual symphony: the tree as a shadowy gatekeeper, the rows of vines as swirling lines - everything revolves around the oval centre, which draws the eye as if into a vortex.
Description:
With Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) the dynamics of the journey are translated into the composition. The deliberate rotation of the camera during the shot dissolves the contours of the tree and vines and creates an abstract, almost surreal depth. The oval centre looks like a portal that lifts the familiar landscape into a visionary dimension - between reality and imagination. The technique emphasises the central theme of the exhibition: the subjectivity of perception and the fluid transition between reality and interpretation.
Special features:
"Wuthering Heights” is unique in its kinetic energy. While many ICM works use linear movements, the circular technique here creates a magnetic pull that draws the viewer right into the rotating movement of the landscape. The silhouette of the tree - little more than a shadow - serves as an archetypal anchor in this vortex, a reminiscence of the constant elements in the changing seasons.
Connection to the exhibition:
The work embodies the motto ‘Rheinhessen beyond the obvious’ by making the region tangible rather than depicting it. It challenges us to see the vineyards not as a postcard motif, but as a living organism - constantly in motion, characterised by perspective and moment.
Reference to Rheinhessen:
The Rhine front near Nierstein is one of the region's most iconic vineyards. ‘Wuthering Heights’ suggests a powerful, almost mythical landscape - a tribute to the elemental force slumbering beneath the gentle surface of the vineyards. The title (based on Emily Brontë's novel) alludes to this wildly romantic duality: Rheinhessen's harmony is always a touch of unruliness.
