Idea of the Night

Sonnenuntergang Rheinhessen MRK 9858

History of origin:
‘Idea of the Night’ was created in the magical transitional period between day and night during a wonderful November sunset. Inspired by the special lighting mood, when the last rays of sunlight colour the blue of dusk with warm accents, the picture captures the fleeting moment in which the vineyard landscape transforms into a mystical intermediate realm. The reduced composition - a single, almost defoliated vine tendril against an atmospheric background - becomes a metaphor for the transition between activity and tranquillity, between the visible and the imagined.

Description:
As the only work in the series with a predominantly blue colour scheme, ‘Idea of the Night’ uses the Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)-technique is particularly subtle. Targeted diagonal camera movements during the exposure create a fascinating interplay between clarity and resolution: the vine and its last leaves remain present as recognisable forms, but are overlaid by transparent veils of colour. This technique creates the impression that the reality of the vine blends with the atmosphere of the evening light - neither completely dissolved nor completely tangible. Each leaf leaves its own fading trace in the pictorial space, while the main vine appears like a ghostly dancer in the twilight. The cool blue tones are broken up by delicate sunset reflections (orange and pink) - a visual echo of the moment in which day gives way to night. This colour scheme creates a meditative, almost dreamlike mood.

Special features:
‘Idea of the Night’ is unique in its chromatic reduction and positional function as a “gateway” to the exhibition. While other paintings in the series glow in intense autumn colours, this work captivates with its cool elegance. The dancing vine with its few remaining leaves looks like a choreographed movement - as if nature is taking a bow before going into hibernation. The special placement in the foyer of the IHK emphasises this inviting gesture: the picture deliberately functions as a visual threshold between everyday life and the art experience.

Connection to the exhibition:
The work embodies the exhibition theme ‘Between Reality & Vision’ through its depiction of the liminal space between day and night - a time when the boundaries of perception become blurred. It invites the viewer to engage with this transition and detach themselves from the clear perception of daylight before entering the exhibition. The work thus functions as a conceptual overture to the entire show.

Reference to Rheinhessen:
The almost defoliated vines in November are characteristic of the Rhine-Hessian landscape in the transitional period. However, ‘Idea of the Night’ does not show the typical working side of viticulture, but rather its poetic dimension - the quiet beauty of the resting phase. The composition recalls the centuries-old connection between viticulture and cyclical thinking in the region, where every winter is necessary to complete the cycle of growth. The title deliberately plays with this idea: ‘night’ here does not stand for the end, but for creative potentiality.
